During the design of Mr Krinkels’ residence, the architect chose a concept
with a lot of open spaces, big windows, walls and roofs made from natural
stones. The residence has a ground surface area of 700 m² and includes
several floors.
The architectural concept led to fewer possible positions for columns,
which resulted in zones with big cantilevers. All this had to be combined
with permanent actions (as a result of the weight of the natural stones).
SCIA Engineer has been used to design the supporting steel structure.
We chose a concept with trusses. In some places, there was little height
available to build trusses with enough rigidity.
We had to pay a lot of attention to the vertical deformations, particularly at
the ends of the cantilevers. Due to the big windows directly under these
trusses, these deformations had to be limited to an absolute minimum.
