(steel) CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 2013 - 2020 LA PALOMBE BRIDGE Bordeaux , France The new bridge will span over a rail yard approximately 180 m wide on the south of St-Jean station in Bordeaux. It will provide connection between the future districts of Amédée St-Germain and Armagnac. The bridge has two lanes for bus traffic and one for road traffic at one side of the arches and a zone for cyclists and pedestrians at the other side. The bridge is 200 m long and has two access bridges. It consists of 2 parts, each 100 m long. The deck is 20.8 m wide and has a weight of 2,200 t steel. The arches are 4.5 m high. The bridge is transported to the site in about fifty sections. These are assembled and welded together on a platform. The first part of the bridge was erected at the end of 2017, the second part in May 2018. It was important to keep the assembly short in order to minimize the interruption of the train traffic. SCIA Engineer was used for both the dimensioning of the bridge in the traffic situation and the erection engineering of the bridge. The first challenge was that the bridge deck has an important influence on the global behaviour of the bridge. The possibility to input and analyse graphical sections was a big advantage. Also advantageous was the SCIA Engineer’s ability to generate stability shapes and use them for the second order analysis. This was useful for the check of the arches without intermediate connection.
