101 ROLLING BRIDGE VLIET Roosendaal , Nether lands ENGINEERING COMPANY Maters en De Koning Vincent Dols Multatulilaan 8, 4707 LZ Roosendaal (NL) www.matersendekoning.nl ARCHITECT ODC-Architecture & Studio Mars OWNER Municipality of Roosendaal GENERAL CONTRACTOR Vissers - Ploegmakers CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 09/2018 - 01/2020 The rolling bridge connects the west and the east part of a new residential district in the city of Roosendaal and is situated halfway the Vliet canal. The bridge consists of 2 parts, a fixed cantilever bridge on the west bank and a moveable cantilever bridge on the east bank. In closed position, the two parts are connected using a bayonet coupling. The bridge has an industrial character referring to the history of the area. The length of the bridge is 29 m and the width 4 m. The engineering of the bridge and the motion mechanism required teamwork of a structural and mechanical engineer. A challenge that had to be faced was the principle of the rolling mechanism for an unbalanced moveable bridge. Another challenge was the detailing of the bayonet coupling and the response to impact forces. For the moving mechanism the principal of a guide rail used for drawers is adapted using heavy lift roller skates which are fitted to the bridge abutment. The main girders of the bridge are ‘pulled’ between these roller skates by means of a rack and pinion mechanism. For the design of the bridge several models were built to analyse different positions of the bridge during normal operation, during opening and closing and when exposed to an impact of a vessel. Beam and plate elements were used and many non-linear functions for several components. CIVIL STRUCTURES 2
