104 The Antwerp dry docks in the Hansadok and the dry docks near the city are the only remains of 200 years of tradition of ship building and restoration in the port of Antwerp. After years of decay, EDR, in partnership with the port authorities, hopes to transform the site into a modern shipyard. Dry dock 5, the second largest and youngest dock, is the first to be restored. Its construction dates to the sixties and the dock is 240 m long, 40 m wide and 9 m deep. The steel gate is a sinking door and measures 41 m by 11.2 m and weighs approximately 170 ton. Two major problems were identified. The door wasn’t sealing properly and the steel structure around the water line was heavily corroded. SBE designed a new lattice structure for the upper part of the door. A specific challenge was the requirement of thicker steel profiles (to better withstand corrosion in the splash zone) inducing higher stiffness without redistributing the stresses into the remaining structure. SCIA Engineer was used to model non-linear supports, the structure itself and elastoplastic steel elements. Non-linear and stability analysis was performed to identify the deformations and stresses in the structure and the buckling modes of the gate. In addition, local mesh refinement, an absence group and integrated steel code checks were intensively used. The model was integrated in a BIM model.
