106 The PV7 ventilation shaft is an underground structure included in the extension of Algiers Metro Line 1 between El Harrach and Algiers International Airport. In order to ensure proper execution and, at the same time, reconcile the respect for architectonic forms with construction phasing and expected actions, the most economical solution was using laminar reinforced concrete elements casted in-situ. The structure is entirely underground, consisting of roof, intermediate and foundation slabs and external and internal walls. As the shaft’s total depth underneath the soil level is equal to 31 m and the water table level is 1.50 m high, thick external walls were used. Also, the hydrostatic uplift of the structure had to be prevented. SCIA Engineer was used to assess the structural behaviour of the shaft, as well as the pressure between the structure and the soil. Internal forces and displacements were calculated, and the reinforcement was inputted in order to check the ultimate and serviceability limit states according to Eurocode 2.
