On one side, there is a fully automatic storehouse with 3 overhead cranes (40 t) having the span of 52 m. These cranes can load trucks and trains that can enter the building. On the other side, there is a quay building with the height of 35 m. In this part, sea ships can be loaded. Expansion walls and removable parts for the quay cranes have also been taken into account. This project has multiple engineering challenges. The foundation limitations in the water part of the building impose strong restrictions on the steel structure. The deformations are also very limited because of the fully automatic overhead cranes. In addition, special measures had to be adopted to consider properly thermal actions. Beside these challenges, a high wind load and overhead crane loads were a huge difficulty. With SCIA Engineer it was possible to find an economic solution for this huge project with all the strong restrictions successfully met. Also, the connections to the foundations could be correctly dimensioned using this finite element calculation software.
