CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 2018 -2020 A large multinational expanded one of its existing terminals by installing two new horizontal cylindrical vessels (bullets) for storage and transshipment of liquid pressurized gas such as LPG. To protect them against external influences, the vessels are embedded within a mound of sand. The applied dimensions, length of 72 m and an outer radius of almost 10 m, make them one of the biggest pressurized vessels in the world. To use the available site space efficiently, the area is surrounded by a retaining structure which consists of L- shaped reinforced concrete elements. During operational emptying and filling, the product temperature changes due to varying pressures. Consequently, the vessels are expanding, and the enclosed soil exerts complicated pressures against the walls. The outer sides of the walls are fully exposed to all weather conditions. SCIA Engineering was used for the resistance design of the retaining structures as well as for checks of crack widths. The ability to input thermal variations decomposed into a linear and a constant component proved to be very useful in analysing the internal forces and bending moments. This resulted (inter alia) in an economical design of the reinforced concrete structure with sufficient strength and limited cracks widths.
