The central building, where the production takes place, has a ground surface of roughly 42 m x 42 m with as little columns as possible. The surrounding buildings are used for storage, machinery and offices. Using exclusively cold formed profiles (Sigma and C sections), finding a solution for the central building was a challenge due to the high snow loads (120 kg/ m²) and about 50 kg/m² of equipment loads in total. The different heights of the individual buildings meant snow accumulation in rather complex shapes. Frisomat had only little time to make the design and provide reporting with reaction forces and steel design checks. SCIA Engineer helped us by performing steel code checks according to EN 1993- 1-3 and providing a well-structured report made in a very nice reporting tool. Thanks to this, the design notes are really professional and easy to read and understand. Using different types of load panels (tributary areas, ‘accurate’ FEM) we were able to model all types of free surface loads, reducing the processing time to a minimum. A non-linear analysis was performed to take into account the tension-only nature of the wind-bracing bars. In the absence of a more accurate production model, we even used the IFC export from SCIA Engineer to communicate with the supplier of internal machinery and piping.
