The main cluster of 3 connected buildings has a total floor area of 2,600 m². For the (dis)assembly of big machines two overhead cranes with a lifting capacity of 10 t each needed to be supported. In the welding workshop four wall mounted jib cranes of 2 t each caused a big challenge. Some composed cold-formed sections were used to make columns with a big stiffness in all directions to account for varying eccentricity caused by the swing of the jib cranes. Except for crane beams, only cold formed profiles with thickness varying from 1.25 to 5 mm were used to construct this project. The SCIA Engineer’s 3D wind generator was used, with some manual adaptations of force coefficients, for an easy generation of the wind loads on the buildings. Due to the many different crane positions, a lot of load combinations can be imposed. Thanks to SCIA Engineer’s combination keys we could convert code combinations to (non-)linear ones and with them it was easy to select the most determining situations. This made it possible to design the structure with a limited amount of non-linear combinations, reducing significantly the calculation time. Only at the end of the design process, the complete set of combinations was used to verify the structural stability.
