Hot gas is transported towards the inlet duct and is converted in the plant to electricity. The building is subjected to earthquake loads. The internal plates work as a rigid structure providing the longitudinal stiffness. In lateral direction the structure is stabilized by the main columns. The bottom (stilt) is braced with diagonals. The stack hat is subjected to temperatures of 553°C, while the rest is heated to 32°C in operation. The high temperature causes two restraints. The yielding limit is lowered a lot and there is the difference in temperature between the two parts. The purpose is to let the top move to limit the stresses, while the structure is sufficiently rigid for wind and seismic loads. The stilt needed to be stiffened to avoid vortex shedding. The SCIA Engineer model uses plates and beams. The used code was the LFRD- method (American Standards). The foundation was already installed on site with given maximum loads per column. This means an important boundary condition for the overall design. Internal forces from SCIA Engineer were used for the connection design. SCIA Engineer was especially useful for the overall design and to understand the different load paths in relation to the deformations.
