147 ARCHITECT Atelier D’architecture De Genval - Chabanne + Partenaires Architecte OWNER Ministère De La Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles GENERAL CONTRACTOR Duchene - De Graeve CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 2017 - 2019 This cutting-edge sports centre in Louvain-la-Neuve (BE) was inaugurated in May 2019. The state-of-the-art complex is the first indoor training and competition centre specifically tailored to the needs of top athletes of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. This 80 m wide and 130 m long structure, with the area of 10,000 m² without any inside columns, is a real feat, and will be able to accommodate up to 2,500 spectators around its indoor athletics track. SC&D designed the steel structure of this centre. This consists of transverse trusses, 80 m long and 14.60 m high. The peculiarity is that the end columns have a V shape, which limits the support points and gives the structure a more architectural silhouette. The entire structure, mostly S355 steel, has the total weight of 540 t. The roof consisting of 3D trusses with diagonals forming equilateral triangles has the span of 80 m and the upper width of 6.20 m. This arrangement reduces the length on the support side. The thickness varies in order to optimise the weight of the trusses. The dynamics of the facade was solved by means of a secondary structure. Although the geometry may seem complex, the result is a simple and appropriate construction that supports sandwich panels on its outer side, and acoustic insulation made of perforated sheet metal on its inner side.
