A thorough renovation was therefore necessary. One of the parts of this renovation project was renewing the entrance. A new canopy was designed, measuring 17.5 by 6.5 m. At its highest point, the canopy reaches the height of 5 m. One of the challenges we faced was the transfer of the geometry of the model from the architect to SCIA Engineer. Due to the fact that architectural programs usually export shapes like this complex shell to IFC using a representation that cannot be transformed into the analysis model, we had to create the model in SCIA Engineer. To simplify the input, we had to “split” the shell into several shell- sections and we defined the geometry in parts. The thickness of the shell was further optimised through the FEM calculation. The 2nd order calculations allowed us to investigate the buckling behaviour of the thin shell. After introducing form errors and keeping the stresses below the elastic limit, we were sure that the plate-thickness of 20 mm would do the job. SPECIAL PROJECTS 4
