SCIA User Contest 2020 Flipping Book
171 For an expansion of the elementary school of Walfergem, neighbouring workshops were completely renovated and converted into a new school building. The eyecatcher of the new schoolyard is a slender and playful canopy. Its design refers to trees, whimsically intertwining with each other, providing shelter and shadow for playing toddlers. The last “trunk” had to be planted in line with the façade, but the crown stretches out for 4 more meters. The main cantilever beams are made of UPN300, which also provide the roof curb. By combining the structural and architectural function, the roof edge is kept slender, despite the significant overhang. The seemingly random direction of the beams and the steel deck represent the natural behaviour of branches and leaves. The design was made in 3D in SCIA Engineer, in close co-operation between the architect and the engineer. The final design was then exported to architectural plans for final detailing.
