175 STEEL CONSTRUCTION CANOPY Leidschendam, Nether lands The project “Mall of the Netherlands” is being built in Leidschendam. Once completed, it will house approximately 230 shops, a cinema and several restaurants. The multiple entrances to the building feature canopies made of fibre concrete elements. An elaborate steel construction holds these elements in their place. For engineering of the steel part of the construction, SCIA Engineer was used. The SCIA Engineer’s model gave us a deep insight in internal forces and displacements. This allowed us to thoroughly analyse the impact of both perpendicular and parallel deformations of the main structure on the interfaces with the façades. This was primarily important as the deflection limits for the horizontal displacements of these iconic glass façades are extremely strict. Furthermore, the white fibre concrete elements, which together form one fluent façade element above the glass façades, were given a maximum gap width at the joints of only 20 mm. The insight into deflection of the steel structure was essential as adjustment options for these elements were limited. With the SCIA Engineer model we were able to check the stricter deflection limits and perform steel code checks according to the Eurocode. In addition, the SCIA Engineer model was used to accurately determine the joint forces for the needs of detailing engineers of the steel supplier. The detailing was done in an IDEA StatiCa application.
