181 EXTERIOR STRUCTURER PRIMARY SCHOOL MELOPEE Ghent , Belgium This exterior playground structure for a primary school in Ghent represented a challenging implementation of an extensive project on a rather small site. A steel box with the ground plan of 40 m by 36 m rises 20 m high to support and hold suspended concrete playgrounds. The school building can be accessed at different levels via a series of inclined and curved slabs. Different functions like slides at +10 m, a basketball field at +14 m, etc. challenge kids to come outside. The main structural challenges lied in the design of a very slender mixed steel- concrete structure exposed to the elements (wind, temperature, etc.). Since the structure is always visible, a lot of attention has been put to detailing of steel nodes to make them visually elegant. The contractors (BAM Contractors and Dugardein - De Sutter) produced a full BIM-model to ensure a complete coordination of all technical aspects including exact production. SCIA Engineer was used to determine the loads acting on foundations and bracing, to evaluate ULS and SLS actions for design of the steel and concrete elements and for connection detailing. It was specifically useful in making a correct estimation of the load distribution between the different elements in this mixed steel-concrete structure .
