No:5 Ekşi İş Merkezi, Kat 4 Ofis 404 İzmit, 41000 Kocaeli (TR) www.sgmproje.com ARCHITECT Tabanlioglu Architects OWNER Unifree Duty Free GENERAL CONTRACTOR Sanat Yapi CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 06/2018 - 09/2018 In this project we have designed the Unifree Duty Free located at Istanbul Airport that is one of the most valuable investments in Turkey. Originally, there were six canopies, each of different shape and height, but only three of them were built. Their size varies from 16 m x 10 m to 10 m x 8 m. Their height is between 6 m and 9 m. The airport is located in the 3rd earthquake zone of the Turkish seismic hazard map. Therefore, in addition to vertical loads, we had to consider also lateral loading caused by seismicity. The most difficult part of this project was modelling of the steel canopy structures with their amorphous shape. All the beams have variable height at their intersections. To deal with this fact, we have designed all the beams as variable-height welded I-beams. We modelled all the I-beams using 2D members for their webs and 1D members of flat cross-section for the flanges. To avoid lateral movements, we used columns made of three tubes welded to each other that “open” on top like tree branches. Thanks to SCIA Engineer’s CAD capabilities we have successfully completed our model. We carried out a 3D stress analysis and checked internal forces at the intersections for detailed weld calculations. We also performed AISC steel code checks and external connection design very easily. SCIA Engineer‘s Engineering Report tool was used for the presentation of the project. SCIA Engineer is the best “co-worker” for our daily work as well as signature projects.
