191 RENOVATION WINTERCIRCUS Ghent , Belgium Constructed in the late 1800’s, Wintercircus served originally as a place for recreation. After a fire destroyed most of the building in 1920, its rebuilding started in 1923, including the roof structure as it is known today. In 2005, an urban development company sogent became the owner of the property and planned its renovation. Once the renovation is completed, Wintercircus will serve as a multi-purpose building with offices for media companies, a rock hall, restaurant, foyer, exposition areas, etc. The span of the dome is 39 m with the height of 11 m. The dome consists of 32 trusses, equally distributed in radial direction that are made of L-shaped profiles only. The dome is connected to the concrete substructure that resists the horizontal tensile forces. SCIA Engineer has been used to check the load bearing capacity of the existing structure according to the current Eurocode standards. To withstand additional vertical loading, reinforcement of the single and double L-shaped steel profiles proved to be adequate. To avoid compression forces in the buckling-sensitive members, tension-only members were applied. The built-in ultimate limit state steel code check detected critical points in the structure. In addition, the manual modification of the buckling lengths has been very useful and helped optimise the model.
