CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 03/2019 - 12/2020 Medium-rise office building in Nicosia, Cyprus has 17 storeys and two basements. The total height is approximately 100 m including a spire and a metal antenna. Medium and high-rise buildings have only recently been allowed by building regulations in Cyprus, a highly seismic area of the world, making this endeavour something unique for the local engineering community. Other challenges include the fact that external columns are inclined for aesthetic reasons and the floor plan is different in each floor. In addition, floor diaphragms have generally very large openings. The integrated approach to the analysis of the building frame, shear walls and diaphragm action in one model was extremely helpful in the design process. SCIA Engineer’s modules for buckling analysis and non-linear analysis proved invaluable for the design of this building and the ability to make fast iterations also helped finish the calculations on time. Besides that, the easy and intuitive functionality of the program in revising support characteristics (such as spring constants) proved helpful in modelling of the pile action.
