52 BUILDINGS 1 A private single-family house is built on a hillside by Hill Way near Heidelberg. It offers about 260 m² of residential area in 4 floors, a lift, swimming pool and several terraces offering splendid views over the Rhein-Neckar lowlands. From the first floor you can get to the pool and from the fourth floor to the street above 10 m higher. The house has a very irregular position of walls between the floors and it features a very big glass front. The building site is very inclined and with bad subsoil. Moreover, earthquake must be considered. The inspection of the subsoil discovered that a rock layer lies deep and in varying depths. The horizontal soil pressure from the street side (that is 10 m higher) must be taken into account as well. To achieve sufficient stability of the structure under given load conditions, a ground 3D frame with long columns reaching to the rock level was planned. It was not possible to use the appropriate machinery in this area, so most of work on the subsoil and foundations was done manually. Thanks to SCIA Engineer and its DWG/IFC import functions, it was possible to create a model of the whole building with surroundings, soil conditions and all appropriate details. The planning was checked, adapted and confirmed by the client using a 3D-PDF file. It was easy to react to all changes, to make accurate and precise calculations, design according to relevant building codes, prepare clear and flexible report with overviews, elevations and required detail drawings.
