SCIA User Contest 2020 Flipping Book

53 BUILDINGS 1 The Quatuor building is situated in the economic north quarter of Brussels. It consists of 4 tower buildings with 7, 11, 16 and 19 upper storey levels. A connection between the 4 towers is made from level 1 till 3 by means of an expansion joint. The towers will mainly be used as office areas (62,000 m²). The space enclosed by the towers forms a landscape garden, adding an extra dimension to the project. Two sub-terrain levels (18,000 m²) will offer parking space and technical rooms. The towers have a curved triangular shape. The floors are executed as flat post tensioned concrete slabs supported by circular columns. The central core is positioned a bit eccentrically, leading to torsional reactions due to the wind load. The 2 highest towers are founded on screw piles. Whereas the 2 lower towers are founded on a shallow raft foundation. No settlement joint has been foreseen between the 2 foundation types because the differences in settlement are expected to be very low. The complete building is modelled in one big global model in order to examine the interaction between the towers and to evaluate the effect of the different foundation types. SCIA Engineer was used to determine the load distribution and to design the raft foundation, pile caps of the cores, reinforcement of the concrete walls and other structural elements.
