54 The Sportoase Sports Centre is situated just outside the city of Antwerp. The building consists of 3 levels, with the length of 73 m, width of 64 m and height of 15 m. It houses a gym on the 1st floor, and a cafeteria and a roof terrace on the 2nd floor. The important factor for the design was that the building has 4 swimming pools on 3 different levels, with one of them situated on the roof. The structure is built with precast beams and columns in a grid pattern of 9 m by 9 m. The horizontal stability of the building is ensured by concrete shear walls. An extra attention is given to the connection between the precast columns and the concrete walls. Most of the floors are made of pre-stressed hollow core slabs. The foundation consists of a system of concrete piles, except for the underground level that is founded on a concrete slab. The saw-tooth shaped roof is built with laminated wooden truss beams with a span of 27 m. The SCIA Engineer model was used to determine the required reinforcement in the concrete walls and floors. Due to the complex building shape, the 3D wind generator was used to obtain more realistic effects of wind loads on the structure, which could then be transformed into detailed loads acting against the foundations. The SCIA Engineer model served also as the basis for a structural BIM model in Revit.
