57 ARCHITECT W-Architectures OWNER Communauté d’Agglomération GENERAL CONTRACTOR n/a CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 2020 The new Conservatory of Music and Dance in La Rochelle (France) is a highly irregular building. The two first levels include mainly a great auditorium and different music rooms. The higher part of the building has a completely different plan shape and is lying on the top of the first floor. It houses small music rooms, classrooms and other practicing areas. SCIA Engineer was used to study and design the whole building at a project level, primarily its numerous walls. These walls are mainly irregular and generally do not overlap between individual levels. Due to this configuration, the seismic design required what is called a double calculation : the first calculation including all the walls and the second one considering the mass of the secondary walls but not their horizontal stiffness. The orthotropic behaviour of the walls was successfully used following a new approach discussed and approved by SOCOTEC France. This approach won us a lot of time compared with the traditional double calculation requirement. Indeed, the orthotropic behaviour implies directly holding of the mass and the vertical stiffness but not the horizontal one. As a result, it directly handles the redistribution of loads in the primary walls..
