58 RENOVATION AND EXTENSION SCHOOL FERRARI Innsbruck , Aus tr ia The existing building dates back to the 1970’s. Two buildings (school and boarding school) together form a building with the area of 50 x 50 m². Several structural joints separate the two parts. Since the school had to be extended while in operation, and the intervention into the school’s building structure had to be minimised, the horizontal wind and earthquake loads acting on the extension were transferred to the structure of the boarding school. The support for vertical loads was “floating” on the structure and the adequate stiffness was ensured by 3 new reinforced concrete walls in the boarding school that was reduced to the basic structure. The main static challenge was the large span between the support points (up to 10 m), bridge structures up to 27.5 m in length, eccentrically positioned new walls as well as sloping walls and sections. At the construction site, the space was very limited and as the schedule was very tight, as many parts as possible had to be pre-fabricated. SCIA Engineer was the right tool for preparing and verifying the structure . The intuitive input together with fast calculation enabled us to analyse the steel structural parts quickly and efficiently . Thanks to it we were also able to react quickly to the requests for modifications.
