59 BUILDINGS 1 CHISINAU CIRCUS Chi s inau , Republ i c of Moldova The Circus building was designed during the 1970s and opened in 1982. It is of patrimony importance for the country in all its aspects: architectural, urbanistic, socio-cultural, historical and functional. The building has a performance hall in the form of an amphitheatre with 1,900 seats, a circular central arena with the diameter of 13 m and a roof in the shape of a steel dome. In 2004, it stopped its activity in order to undertake renovation works, however the building is still not operational. In order to evaluate its actual condition, expertise works that required a structural analysis of the existing building started. The challenges we faced were the structural analysis in accordance with Eurocodes, seismic analysis using real accelerograms, the sufficiency check of the existing reinforcement in concrete elements, the check of steel elements and design recommendations for their strengthening. Strong sides of SCIA Engineer: the extensive support of the Eurocodes, personalized seismic spectrums, the possibility to input 3D reinforcement and to create nonstandard transverse sections. As a result, we were able to perform the building general resistance check, the check of resonance frequencies and to give recommendations for some strengthening of steel elements. ARCHITECT S.
