62 SIMU COMPLEX SIMULATION CENTER OF FACULTY OF MEDICINE Brno, Czech Republi c With the SIMU project the most up-to-date technologies for education of medical students come to the city of Brno. The building itself consists of two main parts: a five-storey high concrete structure and a steel structure of a two-storey bridge over a four-lane road. The bridge part has a trapezoidal plan 52 m long and up to 31 m wide. The maximum height of the bridge is 18 m and the clear span of the bridge 40 m. The final variant is a result of studies of several building shape options. Huge amount of modelling during the design process played its role and lead to implementation of BIM methodology, including the conversion of a 3D CAD model into the SCIA Engineer’s model. The bridge structure was designed as four almost parallel ca 9 m high truss girders made of a welded box profile. The fixed support is built as a stiff steel tower serving as a communication wing. The opposite end of the bridge is supported by elastomeric bearings placed on another part of the building. SCIA Engineer was used for a global analysis. Determining the spatial truss members slenderness was a very interesting part of the static design as the structure uses both the frame and lattice stiffening system. Calculation of quite a large amount of assembly stages and their variations and changes was the structural engineer’s role during the whole execution. Selected connections were tested by a wall-slab analysis.
