64 The project consists of five buildings named A to E. These are a high-rise building of 108 apartments (C), a low-rise part of 57 apartments (D), 2 hotels of 191 (B) and 110 (A) rooms and a building of 161 studios for students (E). These buildings are located near the Amsterdam-Noord train station. Underneath buildings B and C a two-storey parking garage will be realised. The area of the building is ca 80 x 45 m and 60 x 15 m combined. The low rise has the height of 28 m, the student building is 42 m tall and the high-rise building reaches the height of 73 m. The project faced two specific challenges: large soil settlements and large horizontal deformations in building E. Due to the settlements, the internal forces and force distribution on the foundation will change over the lifespan. Therefore, the building design had to cope with the forces in both situations. Building E also faces large deformations because of a 6.5 m cantilever. This problem was solved by creating another cantilever on the other side to balance the structure. By extracting the forces on the foundation, the settlements were iteratively calculated. Being able to extract the forces into an Excel sheet proved very useful in this process. Balancing out building E was made much easier as we were able to expediently calculate the horizontal deformations. ARCHITECT Klunder architecten OWNER CZAN Rood C.V.
