SCIA User Contest 2020 Flipping Book

90 De Groene Boog, a joint venture between BESIX, Duravermeer, Mobilis and Van Oord, has been appointed to design and construct an 11 km long highway connection between the A16 and the A13 in the North of Rotterdam. Several design packages of the project have been attributed to Besix Engineering Department where the design of a 2.2 km underground tunnel is the major part. The tunnel has 2 road tunnel-tubes 13.2 m wide, each having 2 x 3 lanes. Between the 2 tubes a technical/escape tunnel 2.2 m wide is foreseen, which bring the full width of the construction to 30 m. Half of the tunnel height of 7 m is constructed above the existing ground level and will be covered with ground which will create an artificial hill above the tunnel. The tunnel design process entails structural design of many similar sections and thousands of foundations and sheet piles, as well as production of a detailed 3D Building Information Model. To effectively perform these tasks and efficiently cope with all design changes, an automation strategy has been developed that benefits from the tunnel’s repetitive geometry. 2D SCIA Engineer’s sections are automatically generated and the load automatically applied (soil pressure, water pressure, traffic loads,…) based on the tunnel section location (depth,…). Software innovations allow us to dynamically transfer data between multiple software packages and design reinforcement and piles. The assumption of 2D loads distribution is supported by the analysis of a full 3D SCIA Engineer calculation model in a typical section.
