92 The Saint Bachi aqueduct is a suspension water-pipe bridge located near Rians, France. It provides 30% of Aix en Provence water needs. It crosses the Saint Bachi valley with a 148 m long single span. The pipe has a diameter of 3 m. It was built in 1968. The project goal was to replace all the suspension elements of the structure: saddles, mains cables, and suspension cables. The three main challenges have been: • The structural importance of the saddles and main cables in the behaviour of the structure. Both of these elements are non-redundant and can cause a direct collapse of the structure if they fail. • The work had to be done while keeping the pipe in service, i.e. full of water. • The tight schedule to permit another renovation project to start on the Bimont dam. This dam is another major equipment for the regional water supply. For security reasons, both renovations could not happen at the same time. Seeing the critical importance of the saddle in the structure we chose to build a model in SCIA Engineer in which the plates and shells modelling tools are efficient and quite convenient for even complicated shapes . The way SCIA Engineer models intersections between plates and shells gave us full control over the mesh. After the analysis, we used the calculated internal forces to design the welded joints.
