Kolín CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 05/1965 - 03/1969 ANALYSIS OF A STEEL SUSPENSION FOOTBRIDGE Sázava , Czech Republ i c Sázava footbridge is a suspension steel footbridge featuring a typical layout of 3 spans 22.5 + 60 + 22.5 m. It is 2 m wide with pylons approximately 9 m high. The footbridge was constructed between years 1965 and 1969. After 50 years in service, the owner asked for major bridge inspection and structural analysis to determine the residual load bearing capacity. The structural model in SCIA Engineer was created parametrically in MS Excel and imported via the Table Input functionality. The model was created as parametric because the schedule was tight and finding any archive documentation had been a lengthy process. The first model version was created from photos in order to get a preliminary model to work on. That model was later updated with measurements on site and using an incomplete original project documentation. The update of the model took advantage of the parametric definition, MS Excel sheets with the topology were updated accordingly and the new data were imported via Table Input to SCIA Engineer. Next to the already mentioned Table Input, which was invaluable in the modelling phase, we used also SCIA Engineer’s beam non-linearities for the definition of the main cable. The behaviour of the cable stays and the suspension footbridge was analysed using 3rd order methods. Steel checks were used to check single structural elements. We used custom buckling length definition for the check of the top chord of the truss deck. CIVIL STRUCTURES 2
