95 STEEL CONCRETE ZENNE BRIDGE Hal le , Belgium ARCHITECT SBE OWNER Stad Halle GENERAL CONTRACTOR Herbosch-Kiere - Ferrokonstrukt CONSTRUCTION PERIOD 11/2019 - 05/2020 The Zennebrug is located in the city of Halle in Belgium. It is a mixed steel concrete bridge integrally connected to two abutments. It spans 32.9 m across the Zenne river. The bridge has three traffic lanes and a cycle lane at both sides. The total width is 17.5 m. Since the bridge is connected rigidly with the abutments, there are no bearings. The steel part of the bridge is subjected to fatigue. Together with the three lanes, there are a lot of possible load cases to be considered. SCIA Engineer was very helpful in creating the different load cases, as well as all the possible load combinations. The duration of the calculation was limited, and the results were readable. This helped us perform all calculations in one complete model without the necessity of splitting the model into several parts. The stresses in the concrete slab, abutments and foundation piles were also directly obtained from the model. Different construction stages were used within the model, such as the erection of the steel structure with a wet concrete slab as a weight. At that moment the main beams were simply supported without generating bending moments at the abutments. After concreting, the concrete slab and the connection with the abutment provides an important bending moment at its supports. All of this is simulated in one integrated model. The abutments and foundation piles were also modelled in SCIA Engineer. This was needed to obtain the stresses and deformations due to temperature, creep and shrinkage of the structure. This means that when the bridge wants to dilate, it is restrained by the abutments with their passive ground pressure and by the rigidity of the deep foundation piles.
