75 Shutter Balgerhoeke New shutters had to be built on a backwater structure on the Leie (B). These structures can be lifted in order to regulate the height of the water. The front of the structure consists of a rigid tubular construction. The arms on both sides are connected with the hinge-points. On the front of the arms, the couplings of the raising mechanism are connected. When shut, the flap rests upon the bottom and upon the hinge-points. In other positions (e.g. when the flap is raised), the flap hangs in the hinge-points and on the couplings with the raising mechanism in front of the arms. This project treats the control of the new steel-structure. ESA-Prima Win was used to create a model of the 3D-structure. In order to take into account the torsional rigid tubular elements and the complete torsional stiffness of the shutter, 3D plate and shell-elements were used. Also the stiffeners are modelled, in order to achieve their best possible action in the complete structure. Several models have been checked with different supporting conditions and positions (e.g. for the closed situation, opening with both arms, opening with only one arm and taking into account an element stuck between a.s.o.) Thanks to the modelling and easy modification tools in ESA-Prima Win, we could easily calculate, dimension and optimise the structure. The pictures represent the structure (rendered, plate thickness, water load) and results of stresses. The photos illustrate the composition of the structure and its parts. The document contains some elements of the input and the results of the calculation. Short Description
