Concrete high-tension cabinet loaded by an explosive blast Technum Leiepark 18 9051 Gent Belgium Tel.: +32 92400911 Fax: +32 92400900 Contact: M. Dieter Rabaut Email: [email protected] Website: www.technum.be The new design guidelines for HT-cabinets in Belgium require the HT-cabinets to be resistant to an overpressure caused by a shortcut. The energy released by a shortcut is transferred into the thermal expansion of the gasses in the neighbourhood of the shortcut. The basement of the cabinet acts as expansion space. The resulting overpressure on the different elements of the cabinet is defined in the guidelines as an impulse. The impulse is an equal legged triangle with a maximal overpressure of 250 millibar and a duration time of 40 milliseconds. The design is based on the Biggs-methodology: the loading is the maximum overpressure multiplied with a dynamic load factor (DLF). The DLF is function of the form of the impulse wave (equal legged triangle) and the ratio of the first period of the loaded element (T) to the duration of the impulse (td=40 ms). The values for the DLF are found in US Army Corps of Engineers Manual EM 1110-345-415. The loading is placed on the different elements as a static loading. The first periods are determined by a dynamic analysis. 86 Company Project Concrete high-tension cabinet loaded by an explosive blast Technum N.V. is a dynamic, internationally oriented and strongly growing multidisciplinary office for engineering and consultancy with establishments in the various Flemish provinces. Technum provides services for the authorities, industrial and service-providing companies, project developers, international institutions, etc. for each project, single or multidisciplinary, and for each project phase.
