General information The Ministry of National Economy of Oman planned to develop a dry dock ship repair yard as part of the Duqm port under construction 600 km southwest of the capital Muscat. The facility which includes two docks will serve international navigation and repair vessels including Ultra-Large Crude Carriers (ULCC). The Ministry of National Economy and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Company (DSME) signed an agreement in 2006 to form a new company, named the Oman Dry-dock Company to operate and manage the facilities over a period of 10 years. The dry docks and a floating dock will be designed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Maritime Engineering Company. Royal Haskoning in association with Khatib & Alami are the master plan consultants. This project is phase 3 of a three-phased program which comprises: marine works (phase 1) and landside and infrastructure facilities (phase 2). Duqm port will be the fourth major port in Oman, alongside Port Sultan Qaboos, Salalah Port, and the Port of Sohar. Phase 3 covers the construction of two 410m long docks, 2.8 km of quay wall which will incorporate the dry docks, 1.1 million sq. m of paved area including a cofferdam, crane foundations, lay-down area, workshops, accommodation and office buildings. The two dry docks together (1+2) with the pumping facilities (3) form the heart of this project and consist of massive reinforced structures. Challenges Because the construction schedule is very tight, Daewoo E&C needed a solution that would enable them, during the design phase itself, to detect and resolve the potential construction issues. As Daewoo Construction of Ship Repair Yard and Dry Dock Complex at Duqm Port, Oman A shipyard and dry dock complex is proposed in conjunction with the plan for building a New Port and breakwater at Duqm in the Al Wusta Region of the Sultanate of Oman. This complex will provide vessel repair and berthing facilities for vessels of various size and type up to maximum vessel tonnage of 350,000 DWT and will also provide accommodations for workers and guests. The overall size of this project is about 1,000,000m2 at Duqm Port. Major works include construction of two dry docks, marine structures including outfitting quays, workshops and plants, administrative buildings and associated various mechanical and electrical facilities.
