Nemetschek Engineering User Contest 2009

Nemetschek Engineering User Contest 2009 • Category 7: CAD Engineering, Engineering work and special structures 255 7 Construction of Ship Repair Yard and Dry Dock Complex at Duqm Port, Oman E&C wanted to use Allplan for this project, another challenge became clear: this was going to be the first big project designed with Allplan in South-Korea. While South-Korea is still rather conservative towards the use of BIM (building information modelling), Daewoo E&C decided to continue with Allplan. A partnership was created with BasisSoft, Inc. to manage this project with Allplan within a 3 month deadline, starting November 1, 2008. During this period, BasisSoft, Inc. stayed in close contact with Nemetschek for technical support and consulting. The project in Allplan • The building structure was used to create a clear arrangement of all the construction parts. • All structures of the dry docks and pump room were modelled as 3D objects, and all of them have been fully fitted with 3D reinforcement. The availability of the 3D reinforcement model was a clear advantage for the engineers creating the 2D rebar sketches, it allowed them to gain insight in specific parts of the structures were clashes occurred. A lot of these clashes are simply non-existent in a 2D environment and would be easily overlooked. • Tonnages and volumes have been deducted directly from the 3D model. Bar bending schedules and summaries have been automatically created from the 3D reinforcement. • At the same time, all construction drawings were derived from the 3D model with reinforcement using the shell module, and designed according to Korean standard. This approach made it possible to inspect conflict zones, to identify design and calculation flaws, and to make the necessary corrections before the actual construction will start. Because all information is produced directly from the 3D model, changes and adaptations don’t have an impact on the time needed to calculate tonnages, volumes and rebar schedules. All this work has been finished on January 31th, 2009, and all the drawings and data have been send to the construction yard in Oman for inspection.
