And if necessary, experts from other disciplines are consulted: historians, sustainability experts, economists and others, both from Belgium and abroad. BURO II from A to Z BURO II applies this process approach to a wide range of projects in the fields of architecture, interior and urban planning: from housing projects, public and commercial buildings to mixed projects. A strict business organization and the in-house availability of key competencies contribute to an integrated design. BURO II was established in 1978 in Roeselare by Hendrik Vermoortel and Rita Huys. In 1983 BURO Interior saw the light of day, and in 2000 the Urban Planning division was added. Since that time the architect’s office has developed into a solid group with approximately 100 associates, spread over offices in Roeselare, Ghent, Brussels and Guanghzhou (China). In 2009, BURO II merges with ARCHI+I. Gemeenschapsinstelling De Zande ‘Fase 2’ De gemeenschapsinstelling ‘De Zande’ staat in voor de opvang en begeleiding van een 40-tal meisjes die door de jeugdrechter aan de instelling worden toevertrouwd. De sporthal is de tweede fase van het masterplan. In nauw overleg met de gemeente werd besloten om de sportinfrastructuur een dubbel gebruik te geven: zowel voor de jeugdinstelling zelf als voor de openbare gemeentelijke sportactiviteiten. Tijdens de schooluren maken de meisjes gebruik van de sportaccommodatie, terwijl de sporthal voornamelijk ’s avonds en in het weekend publiek opengesteld wordt voor de inwoners van de gemeente. De Vlaamse Overheid, die voor het volledige project initiatiefnemer is, heeft van bij het begin de ambitie gehad om energiezuinig te bouwen en hiermee een voorbeeldfunctie te geven aan het ruime publiek. Net als de school is de sporthal opgevat als een passiefgebouw. Naast specifieke technieken zoals nachtventilatie en warmterecuperatie zorgen doorgedreven thermische isolatie in wanden, vloeren en daken, samen met een doordachte oriëntatie van gevelvlakken en glaspartijen, voor een significante energetische meerwaarde. Door het gebouw deels ondergronds uit te voeren, worden de energiezuinige eigenschappen nog versterkt. Bovendien zorgt de vorm van het gebouw voor een natuurlijke ventilatie. Waar een deel van het gebouw hoger komt omwille van de klimmuur, zorgt een ‘schouweffect’ voor de aanvoer van verse lucht. De sporthal heeft twee ingangen: een publieke inkom aan de straatkant en een beschermde toegang - dichtbij de school - die voor een nauwe verbinding zorgt tussen de lessen en de sportactiviteiten. Sporttechnisch worden alle voorzieningen getroffen. De vrije hoogte van 8 meter laat het uitoefenen van verschillende sporten toe zoals badminton, tennis, volleybal, handbal, zaalvoetbal, … Een cafetaria biedt zicht op de sportzaal. Aan de achterzijde van het gebouw worden ruimtes voorzien voor fitness, squash en dans; palend aan een binnenpatio. Vooraan aan de straatkant is er extra hoogte voor een klimmuur. Het dak kan in een later stadium dienen als buitensportveld en zal omheind worden door transparante metalen schermen. De dakstructuur wordt voorzien met voorgespannen betonliggers die op een afwisselende asafstand worden geplaatst. Deze asafstanden worden bepaald door de visueel aanwezige inplanting van de betonnen kolommen. Het gebouw neemt een belangrijke plaats in binnen de stedelijke omgeving. De verhoudingen zijn gebaseerd op deze van de naastgelegen schuur, Community institution De Zande ‘Phase 2’: Sports hall The community institution ‘De Zande’ is responsible for receiving and supporting some 40 girls who have been entrusted to the institution by the juvenile court. The sports infrastructure has a double use: for both the juvenile institution and the public communal sports activities. The Flemish Government has had the ambition to build in an energy-conscious way. The sports hall has been interpreted as a passive building. The building embodies a ‘bridge’ between the temporary accommodation in the juvenile institution and the return to public and daily life. An energetic added value is achieved by advanced thermal insulation in combination with a well-conceived orientation of surfaces and shape of the building.
