We value our experience in chemical industry, having learned about various processes and technologies and developed an untraditional approach towards structural decisions. We start every project with the desire to make it extraordinary and unique by interweaving methods, technologies and materials. With the help of SCIA we are able to model specific actions such as surcharge drift snow loads, thermal loads, explosions and water pressure on river banks, etc. Our general policy is to study a structure’s work and then model its behaviour as closely to reality as possible. Owner MLPS Ltd Architect arch. Jivka Buchukovska General Contractor Constructa Ltd Engineering Office Constructa Ltd Construction Period 09/2014 - 03/2015 The structure is located in Bulgaria and provides a large area for melting and moulding steel furnaces. The dimensions of the structure are 85.5 x 33-39 m, with an area of 3,100 m2, and height of 7.88 m, with two additional canopies. The hall is trapezoidal in plan because of an existing road and a concrete retaining wall. The main steel frames have a span of 32 m with columns paired 2UPE240 x 1,100 mm and beams 2UPE240 x 850 mm. The medium structure which comprises the staff area, is composed of steel columns and beams, a composite slab, and roofing and walls made of PVC panels. Two 3D models were created in SCIA Engineer for general and seismic actions. We have imported the BG seismic spectrums, and in this case Vrancha, spectrum type 3. It was impossible to have a 90% effective modal mass in eigenmodes, because the substructure with its significant mass moves with the soil and was therefore eliminated from calculations. The seismic deformations were exclusively observed in the relatively thin shells (roof and facade panels modeled as 6mm thick steel sheets): trembling and forming “waves”, torsional effects also. Despite SCIA Engineer’s representation of 3D seismic behaviour, low wide structures require a specific theoretical and experimental investigation. Paired cross sections, which were quite common in the recent past, are now a challenge for all programs based on Eurocode, and are not covered at all. The design was performed using former BG code.
