The structure will consist of prefabricated pieces and bolted connections. SCIA Engineer was the best tool for its design. The graphical display of results in SCIA Engineer helped better understand the behaviour of the structure. The result-tabs are very intuitive and summarize all the stresses. We also used SCIA Engineer to design all steelwork elements. To save time we imported a CAD reference into SCIA Engineer and created the analysis model from it. Connection details were finalized in a CAD tool using the SCIA Engineer model. The design challenges of this project were the architectural limitations; the sports hall could not be higher than the neighbouring buildings. Also, the available space for columns was very limited and some restriction was also applied to the number of columns allowed in the facade. Regarding the roof, the architectural proposal did not allow for the use of conventional trusses as a very clean and light structure was required. Therefore, tubular 3D columns were adopted along with ties to balance the stresses in intermediate supports. It was also possible to use hot rolled beams to meet the height limitation. If a conventional structure was used, the height would be greater and many other restrictions could not be met. Company Maxfalcon Projetos de Engenharia Ltda
