SCIA User Contest 2023

106 The slaughterhouse expansion project involved the addition of three new sections, including a social block on top of an underground fire suppression sprinkler tank, an extension to the rear with a new wastewater treatment plant, and a new overarching steel structure housing a new production floor. The design principle of the new structure was to suspend a new plant level of approximately 4,000 m² from a 3.5 m deep truss, supported by 11 m tall columns. The project presented several engineering challenges, such as providing foundations for the large columns in the presence of existing infrastructure and a nearby NATO pipeline. Additionally, due to the length of the columns and construction sequence, several iterations of second-order analysis were necessary to ensure that they and the foundations could handle the eccentric loads. The 24 m long spans also required careful checking of elements and connections for various load combinations during erection. To address these challenges, SCIA Engineer was used to verify the numerous elements and connections and perform iterative checks for various load combinations during the construction phase. The software’s seamless integration with IDEA StatiCa was particularly valuable for the project. ARTISLACH EXTENSION Buggenhout, Belgium NOMINEE
