SCIA User Contest 2023

140 For the renovation of this aqueduct which supplies the city of Marseille with water, a large scaffolding was necessary to allow the cleaning and the replacement of the stones damaged by time. The structure will be braced on the building or fixed in the stones for the front part. The monument is 385 m long, 85 m high and has 14 piers and 15 bays. Nonlinear hinges of the scaffolding material type were integrated into SCIA Engineer and a nonlinear analysis using Timoshenko’s iterative method was performed. In view of the gigantism of the structure, the model could not be calculated in its entirety but split into several calculations. The stone supply path model on half pier 8, contains 27,454 nodes and 11,100 pieces, 512 supports, 1,198 nonlinearities and 1,863 load panels. The model on a quarter pier 5, contains 27,911 nodes and 12,594 parts, 1,033 supports, 1,307 nonlinearities and 1,850 load panels, for 61 nonlinear combinations each. For structures of this volume, the wind and the self-weight of the material are the most critical loads. Finding a symmetrical and load-distributing geometric design is a real challenge. The checks, steel checks and coupler checks, of SCIA Engineer made it possible to locate and disperse its loads in order to optimize the structure.
