SCIA User Contest 2023

144 The SGC-140 is an impressive crane designed to address the increasing demand for heavy-lifting equipment across various industries. With its remarkable specifications, including a maximum lifting height of 212 m, a Main Boom reaching up to 130 m, and a Jib of 100 m, this massive crane offers exceptional capabilities. The offshore wind industry’s continuous growth has led to higher lifting capacity requirements. To address these demands, a comprehensive model of the crane has been created in SCIA Engineer, incorporating both 1D and 2D elements. The choice of element type is based on structural behavior accuracy, with mast sections represented by 1D elements and complex welded parts predominantly modeled using 2D elements. Nonlinear analysis is utilized to verify the structure, taking into account large deformations. The advanced capabilities of SCIA Engineer, including nonlinear and stability analysis, prove essential in dealing with the high loads and slender geometry of the crane. The software facilitates design iterations and enables the comparison of various optimization options prior to production, contributing significantly to the successful development of the SGC-140. Its comprehensive features and efficient workflow make SCIA Engineer a valuable tool in realizing the full potential of this impressive heavy-lifting crane. CRANE SGC-140 Worldwide NOMINEE “The choice of element type for specific parts is dictated mainly by the accuracy of the structural behaviour.”
