149 CANOPY ENTRANCE ‘GASTHUISBERG’ Leuven, Belgium The fully glazed steel canopy visually connects different levels and features long columns that extend to the lower levels. Steel is used for the stairs, bridges, and canopy structure. Glass elevators in the circulation void enhance the play of light and shadow, drawing attention upward. The central access point spans 47 x 16 m, while the overhead canopy measures 43 x 27 m, providing wider coverage for shelter from rain. Seamlessly integrated between adjacent buildings, the canopy complements the surrounding architecture. Supported by columns, the canopy extends from all sides, gradually reducing in height from 1,200 mm to 200 mm at the edges. Its structural integrity relies on 30 mm thick steel plates arranged diagonally, sloping down to the tapping points and following a curved shape to accommodate forces. The columns, specifically type 406.4/30 S355, are 16.5 m long. A fixed support is obtained by attaching them to the basement’s floor and roof plates. The force effects were initially estimated using elastic linear calculations. Subsequently, EEM calculations were employed to investigate instability phenomena. Stresses were verified through second-order calculations, considering form errors in the characteristic instability shapes.
