153 STREET LIGHTS STRUCTURE Ruse, Bulgaria Two structures were designed with spans of 9 m and 12 m respectively. For the 9 m span, the columns are made of RHS 220 x 140 x 5, while for the 12 m span, the columns are RHS 250 x 150 x 5. The beams utilized are RHS 200 x 120 x 5, and the light holders are RHS 100 x 50 x 5. The design process involved modelling the structures in SCIA Engineer and conducting checks according to Eurocode guidelines for wind loads, including oscillation, buffeting, galloping, vortex shedding, as well as considering snow, ice, and seismic loads. To ensure safety and account for temperature changes, all friction connections were eliminated, as they are considered unsafe and susceptible to yielding. Rectangular pipes were chosen for the niches intended for technical inspections, offering improved convenience. The foundations were strategically positioned low beneath the pavement level to conceal the base of the columns and prevent obstruction to pedestrians. To prevent water accumulation, freezing, expansion, corruption, and corrosion, all cross-sections of the columns, beams, and light holders were designed to be open. This choice of using RHS (rectangular hollow section) structures not only reduces weight but also enhances safety, making them more than twice as light as traditional structures with thick hot rolled circular pipes.
