SCIA User Contest 2023

157 TORNADO ‘FENIX’ Rotterdam, Netherlands The Tornado is situated within a warehouse, constructed in 1923, and features a Tornado-shaped structure as the centerpiece. The Tornado, designed by MAD Architects, is constructed as a spaceframe with round tubes and stainless steel cladding. A separate table structure was implemented to support the Tornado within the existing warehouse, ensuring it remains detached from the concrete structure. The warehouse will house a museum about migration with the Tornado serving as the prominent art piece. The Tornado’s design and finishing, resembling a ship with a steel exterior and wooden interior, symbolizing the journey of people. Going up feels as a journey and it offers you a new perspective on Rotterdam and the world. It is a revelation, a new horizon, an unexpected new view. The project involves the construction of a viewing platform with a spiral-shaped path, the roof is 30 m high, the path and platform is maximum 22 m. The path spans approximately 400 m and presents challenges related to dynamics and large spans. The geometry was transferred into a calculation model using Grasshopper, and Excel was used to export the initial centerline models. The final design was implemented in SCIA Engineer with consideration for boundary conditions. Stability analysis and steel checks were conducted, with good correlation between the Ansys and SCIA Engineer models.
