SCIA User Contest 2023

158 This attraction comprises a static support structure and a rotating wheel. The support structure consists of two vertical A-frames holding the main axle at a height of 32 m above ground level. Additionally, there are two inclined support legs attached to the backside of the main axle. The wheel itself has a 56 m outer diameter divided into 20 sectors, accommodating a total of 40 gondolas, with each gondola accommodating up to 10 adult passengers. The static support structure features eight friction drive wheels that rotate the wheel at a speed of 1 revolution per minute. Designing such a structure involves multiple iterations. It must withstand static loads from wind or seismic events when not in use and have sufficient fatigue resistance to handle varying passenger occupancies. Balancing static strength and fatigue resistance, especially in connections, can be challenging. With the help of SCIA Engineer, the team efficiently carried out the iterative design process for the main structural components and standard connections. Non-standard connections were also evaluated through supplementary calculations. Consequently, we have developed a design that complies with the requirements outlined in EN 13814.
