SCIA User Contest 2023

161 GLASS DOME Knokke, Belgium The project involves constructing a 7 m radius dome made of glass and stainless steel in Knokke’s Albertplein underground car park. It stands out for its unique assembly method, using a “puzzle fashion” connection without welds or bolts, only “geonodes.” The challenge was accurately representing real conditions in a simple yet realistic model, including rotational and translational stiffness of nodal connections. Lab tests determined rotational stiffness values. Loading the model, selecting critical load combinations, and ensuring stability in this flexible structure required 3rd order analysis and imperfections. The complex structure necessitated powerful and reliable software, such as SCIA Engineer. Key functionalities used in the model include an input table for wind loads, nonlinear third-order analysis for stability, and the steel check tool for efficient multiple checks.
