SCIA User Contest 2023

164 The team faced a challenging project of implementing a temporary structure that had to be of great height (22 m), reuse sections to support heavy loads, and adapt to a civil engineering geometry with curved shapes. Their temporary structure had to constitute a platform of 450 m² located at 22 m high and support shoring, which had to take up the dead weight of the reinforced concrete walls and slabs of the upper floors, resulting in an overall load lowering of 1,600 tons. Since their structure was temporary, the team’s objective was to position the posts of the structure precisely outside the footprint of the building to be constructed above, allowing the structure to be dismantled using mobile cranes later. SCIA Engineer played a crucial role in helping the team carry out a stability study of the structure to determine the precise buckling coefficients of the columns. They also utilized the geometric nonlinearity functionalities to consider the effect of the initial curvature of their reused profiles and the impact of global imperfections caused by the misalignment of the posts. They proceeded with first-order nonlinear calculations to consider these phenomena as well as the modelling of the braces in tension alone. ARCHITECT Temperaturas Extremas Arquitectos S.l.p.
