167 RAILWAY UNDERPASS (INSTALLATION BY FLOTATION) Treytorrens, Switzerland The project involved the design and dimensioning of a railway underpass capable of supporting two railway tracks. Notably, this project included an exceptional installation method, a first in Switzerland, where the underpass was floated in Lake Leman. The new structure was transported across the lake from Le Bouveret and carefully positioned on a 35 m long ramp. Subsequently, it was shifted from the shore onto metal rails using a total jacking capacity exceeding 240 tons. To ensure the successful execution of this unique undertaking, a meticulous study was conducted utilizing SCIA Engineer. The software facilitated a comprehensive analysis of flotation, enabling precise calculations for the dimensioning of the 3D stiffened welded compound box. The center of mass and metacentric center were accurately determined, thanks to the capabilities of SCIA Engineer. This project highlights the versatility of SCIA Engineer in adapting to atypical civil engineering endeavors. It showcases the software’s advanced analysis capabilities, enabling center of mass calculations and the design of exceptional welded compound structures, typically associated with the realm of mechanical engineering.
