170 In Den Helder, a project is underway to upgrade 154 apartments using 3D printed concrete elements. Over 1200 elements, ranging from 2 to 12 m², will enhance the aesthetic appeal of two existing buildings, giving them a unique and modern appearance. The use of 3D printing technology eliminated the need for formwork and significantly increased the design freedom for the architect compared to traditional production methods. This project marks the first largescale application of 3D printed concrete in the Netherlands. Since the material properties of 3D printed concrete are not defined by the Eurocodes, comprehensive material testing was conducted to characterize its strength, stiffness, and behavior regarding shrinkage and creep. Among the 1200 elements, 125 are unique in design. To efficiently design and analyze all these elements, including their connections to the support structure and steel balustrades, a computational design process was implemented. By utilizing KOALA, a plug-in in SCIA Engineer that connects Grasshopper with SCIA Engineer, the project team was able to seamlessly import the geometry, loads, and boundary conditions automatically. The generation of engineering reports facilitated the clear presentation of internal forces and stresses, which were then used to verify the structural integrity of the elements.
