171 RENOVATION MONUMENTAL IRON CANOPIES RAILWAY STATION Leeuwarden, Netherlands Over the years, the Leeuwarden station has undergone expansions and renovations, including the addition of high and low canopies. The high canopy features slender trusses supported by iron beams and columns, while the low canopies consist of lattice trusses connected to columns and I-beams. Everything made of historical cast and wrought iron. The recent renovation project aimed to improve the structure while preserving its historical character. SCIA Engineer played a crucial role in the renovation process, allowing for the generation of custom cross-sections and conducting detailed calculations. Nonlinear analysis helped study the behavior of the structure under wind loads and temperature deformation. The software also facilitated the design of the concrete foundation reinforcement and enabled the export of node results for connection analysis in IDEA StatiCa Steel Connection. The structural model provided valuable insights for evaluating damages, conducting new calculations, and optimizing the design for the timber roofs and glass facades. Overall, the renovation project at Leeuwarden Station successfully balanced the structural improvements required for a 100-year design life while respecting the station’s historical significance. SCIA Engineer proved to be a valuable tool in the design, analysis, and execution phases, ensuring the project’s success and the preservation of this iconic Dutch landmark.
