46 SINGLE-STOREY BUILDING Drumbeg, Scotland The house is perched on a steep site by Scotland’s northwest coast, facing the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a single-story structure designed to lightly touch the earth, minimizing the need for extensive foundations. The floor plan consists of three blocks connected by glass links. Two blocks are supported by slender steel columns rising 12 m above ground level. The roof features a 5 m cantilevered edge, providing terrace cover without obstructing views. Wind loads are a challenge due to the exposed location and height. SCIA Engineer analyzed and designed the steel structure, considering deflections, member forces, and tension-only bracing. Timber floors and roofs were modeled as diaphragms, eliminating the need for steel bracing. Multiple load cases optimized member sizes, and the engineering report provided an easily updatable calculation package.
